The picture shows one section of the decorated ceiling over the main nave of the former Benedictine monastery church in Hildesheim. The monumental paintings on this ceiling (overall length 27,6 m, width 8,7 m, covering approximately 240 square m) composed of 1.300 oak boards, are among the major achievements in the field of Romanesque panel painting that have survived north of the Alps ■ German Romaesque Painter, The Sleeping Jesse (1225-50), Tempera on primed oak boards, St Michael (Hildesheim).
