Hans S.von Kulmbach (1480–1521/22 Nuremberg), The
Ascension of Christ, Oil on wood (24 1/4
x 15 in), Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) ■
This painting and eight others (now
dispersed in various museums) once comprised the lateral wings and predella
panel of an altarpiece of about 1513 devoted to the life of the Virgin. A
sculpted Coronation of the Virgin (Germanisches Nationalmuseum,
Nuremburg) was the centerpiece. Kulmbach trained with Albrecht Dürer, and our
Ascension was adapted from a woodcut in Dürer's "Small Passion"
series ■
