Ven, Espíritu divino,
manda tu luz desde el cielo
Padre amoroso del pobre,
don en tus dones esplendido;
luz que penetra las almas;
fuente del mayor consuelo.

Ven, dulce huésped del alma
descanso de nuestro esfuerzo,
tregua en el duro trabajo,
brisa en las horas de fuego,
gozo que enjuga las lágrimas
y reconforta en los duelos.

Entra hasta el fondo del alma,
divina luz, y enriquécenos.
Mira el vacío del hombre
si tú le faltas por dentro;
mira el poder del pecado
cuando no envías tu aliento.

Riega la tierra en sequía,
sana el corazón enfermo,
lava las manchas,
infunde calor en el hielo,
doma el espíritu indómito,
guía al que tuerce el sendero.

Reparte tus siete dones
según la fe de tus siervos.
Por tu bondad y tu gracia
dale al esfuerzo su mérito;
salva al que busca salvarse
y danos tu gozo eterno ■

V. The Lord Be with you
R. And Also with you
V. Lift up your hearts
R. We lift them up to the Lord
V. Let us give thanks to Lord our God
R. It is right to give him thanks and praise

It is truly right and just,
our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.

For bringing your Paschal Mystery to completion,
you bestowed the Holy Spirit today
on those you made your adopted children
by uniting them to your Only Begotten Son.
This same Spirit, as the Church came to birth,
opened to all peoples the knowledge of God
and brought together many languages of the earth
in profession of the one faith.

Therefore, overcome with paschal joy,
every land, every people exults in your praise
and even the heavenly Powers, with the angelic hosts,
sing together the unending hymn of your glory,
as they acclaim:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

VISUAL THEOLOGY

Pentecost Sunday (2013)

This Sunday we celebrate the solemnity of Pentecost, the feast of the Spirit of God, however in a sense we can say also that today is the birthday of the Church, or the day on which the Church receives the great impulse of the Spirit of God to begin her missionary activity.

In 1961 Pope John XXIII wrote an encyclical called Mater et Magistra[1] ("Mother and Teacher"), and there he described the Church's beautiful role as mother of the faithful, but also her awesome duty as teacher of mankind. There he applied the teachings of Jesus to so very specific issues. At that time one Catholic columnist was upset by what the pope had to say, and he wrote an essay that became known as Mater yes, Magistra no! It seemed fine for the Church be a tender, loving mother, but he gets angry when she pronounced teachings he did not like.

Well, the attitude of this journalist sadly summed the attitude of many contemporary Catholics… Many of us want the church as a mother, but we cannot forget that a true mother must also instruct, and correct. A good teacher cannot simply friendly slap a student on the head and say, "keep up the good work." At times she will have to set a student straight. The job of correcting is not an easy one. To accept correction is hard. It involves the cross, a willingness to suffer.

Let me explain this a little bit better using a good story. A Catholic doctor here in town once experienced a profound spiritual renewal. He realized his faith needed to affect not only his role as husband and father, but also his entire life. In his medical practice he had been prescribing the pill and other forms of contraception. After studying the effects of these contraceptives, he concluded many of them not only prevent conception, but also cause the destruction of a newly conceived human life. Even though the embryo is very small, still what he prescribed could destroy that tiny child. So, this serious reflection led him to review Catholic teaching regarding contraception. He made the bold decision to stop prescribing artificial contraception and instead to teach natural means.

This doctor's decision involved the cross. He naturally lost many of his patients; his classmates treated him like he had an infectious disease. They kept their distance. His family suffered and there was some fear. But, you know, along with the cross God gives blessings. It brought his family together like they never were before, and eventually he built up a practice based exclusively on natural methods. He now has so many patients he cannot take new ones…

[Anyway], for us as well it can involve a kind of martyrdom to accept the Church as not only our mother, but also our teacher. My brother, my sister, following Jesus is not just a matter of some pious feelings, and at the same time our faith is not a collection of teachings and practices; it is something much more intimate and profound. It is a relationship of friendship with the person of Jesus Christ BUT only by a humble submission to the Church as our teacher can we, as St. Paul says, discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect .

To sum up: In the long run we cannot have the Catholic Church as our mother unless we also accept her as our teacher, as simple as this! And as Jesus makes clear, in accepting his Church, we are accepting him.

Let us ask this morning to our blessed Mother –the Queen and Mother of the Church- her help to have a good attitude toward the spouse of Christ, toward her teachings, toward her Magisterium.

Let us NOT forget that just as Eve was born from Adam's side, asleep, so the Church was born from the side of Christ, also asleep in the tree of the cross ■

[1] The encyclical was written on the topic of "Christianity and Social Progress". It was promulgated on May 15, 1961. The title means "mother and teacher", referring to the role of the church. It describes a necessity to work towards authentic community in order to promote human dignity. It taught that the state must sometimes intervene in matters of health care, education, and housing.

Y dejas, Pastor Santo,
tu grey en este valle hondo, escuro,
con soledad y llanto;
y tú, rompiendo el puro
aire, ¿te vas al inmortal seguro?

Los antes bienhadados,
y los agora tristes y afligidos,
a tus pechos criados,
de ti desposeídos,
¿a dó convertirán ya sus sentidos?

¿Qué mirarán los ojos
que vieron de tu rostro la hermosura,
que no les sea enojos?
Quien oyó tu dulzura,
¿qué no tendrá por sordo y desventura?

Aqueste mar turbado,
¿quién le pondrá ya freno? ¿Quién concierto
al viento fiero, airado?
Estando tú encubierto,
¿qué norte guiará la nave al puerto?

¡Ay!, nube, envidiosa
aun deste breve gozo, ¿qué te aquejas?
¿Dó vuelas presurosa?
¡Cuán rica tú te alejas!
¡Cuán pobres y cuán ciegos, ay, nos dejas! ■

tanto más bajo y rendido, y abatido me hallaba;
Dije: «No habrá quien alcance»; y abatíme tanto, tanto,

VISUAL THEOLOGY

It is truly right and just,

always and everywhere to give you thanks,

For the Lord Jesus,
the king of glory,
conqueror of sin and death,
ascended (today) to the highest heavens,
as the angels gazed in wonder.

Mediator between God and man,
judge of the world and Lord of hosts,
he ascended, not to distance himself from our lowly state
but that we, his members, might be confident of following
where he, our Head and Founder, has gone before.

Therefore, overcome with paschal joy,

and even the heavenly Powers, with the angelic hosts,
sing together the unending hymn of your glory,

Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord (2013)

This Sunday we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord and also Mother's Day, and all this at the greatest treasure of the Catholic Church: the Eucharist... In 1961 Pope John XXIII wrote an encyclical called Mater et Magistra ("Mother and Teacher"), and there he described the Church's beautiful role as mother of the faithful, but also her awesome duty as teacher of mankind[1]. In the encyclical he applied the teachings of Jesus to so very specific issues. One Catholic columnist was upset by what the pope had to say and he wrote an essay that became known as Mater yes, Magistra no! It seemed fine for the Church be a tender, loving mother, but he get angry when she pronounced teachings he did not like.

Sadly this journalist he summed up the sad state of many contemporary Catholics… Next month I will have been a priest for thirteen years, and I have noticed that many want the church as a mother. When a loved one dies –or some other crisis- people instinctively turn to the Church like an injured child seeking his mom. This is a wonderful moment, and whereas God is first and foremost "Father," his church must always be as a mother…

There is, nonetheless, a massage to this tender image. A true mother must also instruct. A teacher cannot simply pat a student on the head and say, "keep up the good work." At times she will have to set a student straight. The job of correcting is not an easy one. To accept correction is hard. It involves the cross, a willingness to suffer.

Let me tell you about someone who did respond to this challenge. A Catholic doctor once experienced a profound spiritual renewal. He realized his faith needed to affect not only his role as husband and father, but his entire life. In his medical practice he had been prescribing the pill and other forms of contraception. After studying the effects of these contraceptives, he concluded many of them not only prevent conception, but cause the destruction of a newly conceived human life. Even though the embryo is very small, still what he prescribed could destroy that tiny child. This serious reflection led him to review Catholic teaching regarding contraception. He made the bold decision to stop prescribing artificial contraception and instead to teach natural means.

This doctor's decision involved the cross. He naturally lost many of his patients; his colleagues treated him like he had a infectious disease. They kept their distance. His family suffered and there was some fear. But, you know, along with the cross God gives blessings. It brought his family together like they never were previously. And eventually he built up a practice based exclusively on natural methods. He now has so many patients he cannot take new ones.

[Anyway], for us as well it can involve a kind of martyrdom to accept the Church as not only our mother, but our teacher. Following Jesus is not just a matter of some pious feelings. Our very minds must be renewed so we can resist the destructive power of the culture that surrounds constantly. Only by a humble submission to the Church as our teacher can we, as St. Paul says, discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect[2].

To sum up: In the long run we cannot have the Catholic Church as our mother unless we also accept her as our teacher. And as Jesus makes clear, in accepting his Church, we are accepting him. Amen ■

Mayo, mes de María

Tú eres toda hermosa,
¡oh Madre del Señor!;
tú eres de Dios gloria,
la obra de su amor.

¡Oh rosa sin espinas,
oh vaso de elección!,
de ti nació la vida,
por ti nos vino Dios.

Sellada fuente pura
